The almighty Pen. It’s one of the least expensive most widely used promotional product. In fact did you know:
It is typically one of the first purchased promotional product because of the ROI and low Cost Per Impression (CPI). Here’s possibly the biggest problem with pens/writing instruments – Which one do I choose? I just did a quick search for pens and how many came up 21,082. That’s A LOT of pens to choose from and it can be a bit overwhelming. So if you don’t have a Pen that helps to brand your business – first and foremost, get one and second here are a few tips on how best to pick out a pen. We will also give you ideas in Part 2 on how to best use your new pen to get the word out about your company.
So here’s the great news – do you have a pen that you use everyday that you love? Chances are that pen is available to put your logo on it. Probably for close to the same price you pay at your office supply store for non-branded pens. This makes purchasing a branded pen EASY.
Do you have a pen that was given to you that you love – chances are it can be found – but here’s the bad news you definitely have to be careful about the pen you choose which is why a promotional products expert can lead you to the better quality – although pens look the same, they may not be the same. Ahhhh dang say it ain’t so. Well unfortunately it is.
I do hear this A LOT – I want a cheap pen. What? No you don’t this pen represents your brand. What you probably meant to say is “I want a pen that has a perceived high value but I don’t want to pay a lot”. Okay, I understand that completely. So most important piece of information you can give me – What is your budget? I don’t want to put you in a Ferrari if you want a Yugo.
So let’s get started: Purchasing a pen comes with questions you should already know the answer to in order for your Promotional Products Expert to find the right pen for you. Or if you are a DIY – trust me, you want to know all these answers before searching.
- What color ink do you need? There are a lot of professions that require a certain color ink.
- Do you need Anti-Fraud Ink?
- Do you have a specific color of pen you would like to match your corporate colors?
- Do you want a stylus? More and more ppl today have a tablet or smartphone.
- Do you want any type of accessory on your pen – flashlight, laser pointer?
- Do you have a preference when it comes to skinny or fat pen?
- Do you want some type of grip?
- What type of action do you want? Plunger (though I like “Clicky”), Twist, Removable Top.
So you now know the construction type of the pen you want!!
Remember that daunting number of 21,082? By adding that I want a plunger, grip, blue ink pen I just narrowed it to 286. Out of those 286 I can see that about 1/4 are what I would classify as skinny pen. A much more manageable number for us to look at.
You also need to consider what you are going to put on your pen. Knowing the answer to these questions up front can save some undue time hunting the wrong pen!!
- Do you want 1 color or more?
- Do you want your logo or just text?
- Do you want your phone number, website or motto?
- Do you want laser engraved?
Why do we need to know this? So we can suggest the right pen for you.
I had a client who wanted to purchase a pen and said “I want a pen that is our corporate colors and I am on a budget so show me what you have. I am most concerned about the price.” That gave me enough to work with. So I suggested a pen which would have a high perceived value but was still in his price range. It included a 1 color imprint in a space about 1/2″ x 1″. I sent him a mock up of what we could put on it. In that time, he decided he wanted it imprinted in 2-3 colors and his logo printed. Yikes – a) it was more expensive for multiple colors b) there is no way his logo would print on that small of an area and not fill in and still look good. So what did I do – I suggested a slightly more expensive pen that included 2-3 color imprint and had a MUCH larger imprint area.
The more information you give me at the beginning, the better product I can suggest for you. AND don’t be so set on a “cheap” pen. Be set on the end quality of the product and it’s perceived value. Your brand depends on it!! I have to say those pens turned out awesome!!!

Did you know – Cost Per Impression. In the U.S., the cost per impression of a promotional product is 0.6 cents, compared to prime-time TV and national magazines at 1.8 cents each and 0.7 cents for newspapers.
After my daughters band concert last night, my husband and I set out to run to the store for little goodie bags for my son’s class. Afterwards, we stopped at one of our favorite places to eat – Mexican!! A couple of months ago, my husband laughs and says to me, we’re going to start leaving a pen and see how long it takes for us to get the pen back to sign our bill. So every time we had dinner there, if we had a pen on us, we left one. Last night we get our bill and I’m looking at my phone and hear him snicker. I look up and he says, look. He’s pointing to our Allegro pen that he had just been given to sign our bill.
Imagine – how many people see and use our pens.
Do you use pens, pencils, highlighters or stylus pens to advertise?
